Compost Products

We DO NOT use biosolids in our production

ANNUAL COMPOST

The perfect mix for annual flower and vegetable gardens that are replanted each year.

Made of recycled food scraps, soft-wood chips, leaves and spray free hay broken down over 4-5 months and is fully cured with high microbial life present.

PERENNIAL COMPOST

The perfect holistic soil amendment for trees, shrubs, berries and other perennials.

Great to add into holes at planting and for seasonal top dressing around rooted plants. Made of a balanced mix of food waste and woody materials that are broken down over 6-18 months. This is a highly fungal product that encourages nutrient cycling between plants and soil.

WORM COMPOST

Uniquely suited for biopriming seeds, making extracts and teas, adding to home-made seed start mixes, light application to bare soils, top dressing plants, and easing the transition of transplanting.

A highly nutrient and biologically dense compost with worm castings throughout. Prized for it’s unique plant growth enzymes and hormones that set this type of compost apart from others. Because of it’s potency, application rates are about 1/20th of the typical compost. Sifted to 1/4 inch.

CALCULATE COMPOST LAYER DEPTH

First time compost

If you are breaking new ground that’s covered in plants, first apply a tarp or cardboard to kill off the plants. Pour at least 3 inches compost on top of the cardboard and water very well to ensure breakdown of cardboard. You can also till, but we recommend tilling only once on new ground and then layer compost on top. No need to do any “mixing”.

New raised beds

We recommend that about one-third of your raised bed mix be compost. Our compost is high in stable carbon, biologically active, and contains slow-release nutrients that help build long-term soil health.

Because our compost is carbon-rich, we also recommend adding a broad-spectrum fertilizer such as Down To Earth’s Vegetable Garden Fertilizer. This helps provide readily available nutrients that support strong plant growth during the first season and each season until your bed is producing vigorously.

To maintain soil health over time, top-dress your raised beds with ½–1 inch of compost each year. This replenishes organic matter, feeds soil biology, and provides a steady supply of slow-release nutrients.

Established gardens

We recommend you add 1/2 – 1 inch of compost each year.

Improve struggling soil

If your garden soil is struggling, apply about 2 inches of compost to the surface of the bed and incorporate it lightly into the top few inches of soil.

Pair this with a broad-spectrum fertilizer, such as Down To Earth’s Vegetable Garden Fertilizer, to ensure plants have access to both biological support and readily available nutrients while the soil improves.

What Size Vehicle Do I Need?

A cubic yard is 3 feet wide by 3 feet long by 3 feet deep. A short bed truck only fits one yard of compost product.

Questions

What is Compost?

WHAT CAN COMPOST DO FOR YOUR GARDEN OR FARM?

Compost is not soil and it is not dirt and not all compost is the same!

It’s a holistic soil amendment made of decomposed organic matter that provides your soil with a dose of plant available nutrients and the microscopic biota necessary to continue unlocking nutrients long after it’s been applied. It’s a long term solution to soil infertility, and pest and weed management when utilized with appropriate soil stewardship methods.

Our compost is different than other compost options. We craft ours with regenerative agriculture in mind, helping to build the soil and reintroduce important microorganisms to the soil. This results in healthier, more nutrient dense plants for harvest.

Are We Organic?

ARE WE ORGANIC?

We aren’t currently certified organic, but we follow the same guidelines that are required of business selling organic compost with one exception.  We accept BPI Certified compostable plastics.  BPI Certification means that foodware items are scrutinized by a 3rd party, ensuring containers will break down physically and also not leave behind chemical residue.  This is the only certification standard which prohibits the use of PFAS in manufacturing.

We feel we have a duty to service our community by providing the option of composting food ware items, rather than sending them to landfill.  “Compostable” plastics often have synthetic binders in them, which is why if used in compost production, it cannot be certified organic by state standards.  Our mix is comprised of food waste, wood chips, leaves, spray free hay and garden cutback.  We turn our piles five times to ensure a healthy and synthetics free product.  We test our product annually to check for any herbicide contamination.

Unfortunately, due to rising concerns with herbicides we no longer use horse manure in our mixes.

Our Process

OUR PROCESS

Dirt Rich uses a thermal composting process while following organic composting standards to ensure our piles reaching 130+ degrees fahrenheit for over 48 hours. This helps ensure no unwanted pathogens or seeds survive the composting process. Our compost is fully cured so seeds can be planted directly into it.

We use a variety of inputs and are particular in our processes to offer the highest quality compost available in the Flathead Valley. We compost BPI Certified compostable containers in our processes.

Because our operation is entirely outdoors, we cannot guarantee a 100% weed free product.
